A Popup Wedding at the Renwick Gallery — Denise & Matt

Popup Wedding at Renwick Gallery's Wonder Exhibit Jennifer Angus Piece

We had three amaaaazing weddings yesterday — here’s the first one: Denise & Matt were married at the newly reopened Renwick Gallery! Pretty sure this was a once-in-a-lifetime location, I mean, who could even imagine that a popup wedding at the Renwick would be possible?! Denise and Matt were such a fun couple to be married there, and I’m pretty sure they made everyone’s day!

The gallery was mobbed when we got there. People were everywhere! We grabbed a corner of the Grand Salon where Janet Echelman’s beautiful piece took over the ceiling, providing a gorgeous backdrop for the ceremony. We had no idea how many people were watching, but as soon as Steven pronounced them married, the entire room started cheering for Denise and Matt! Sweet x10000!

We saw a few people watching…

But some people were still gazing at the ceiling (because holy shit Echelman’s installation is gorgeous).

But then suddenly everyone was watching and clapping!

The gallery was packed, but we found a quiet millisecond inside Tara Donovan’s piece, made up of thousands (millions?) of index cards.

And then…the bug room.

First off, this installation is amazing itself. Called “In the Midnight Garden” by Jennifer Angus, the wall color is made up of bug carcasses and shines this vibrant, deep pink. Then the wallpaper patterns are entirely made up of impeccably preserved bugs. They’re huge! They’re intricately beautiful and stand no chance of landing on you, so zero scare factor there.

The Gabriel Dawe piece with the rainbow thread was maybe the busiest of all — and you can see why, the colors! The light! Ahhhh!

And we played around in Patrick Dougherty’s installation, which was damn impressive! And fun to hide in :)

We have nothing but gratitude to the Smithsonian team, specifically Laura and Taylor, for helping Denise and Matt have such an epic tiny wedding! <3

Congratulations Denise & Matt, I hope your first full day of marriage is going swimmingly and that you had lots of leftover cake for breakfast :D
